SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, 3rd July 2026 – Aegros Therapeutics today announced the completion of its Haemafrac® plasma fractionation facility at Macquarie Park, Sydney. Capable of processing 125,000 litres of human plasma annually, the facility is now undertaking commissioning and engineering fractionation runs ahead of its first TGA GMP regulatory audit this year.
A Reimagined Approach to an 80-Year-Old Industry
For more than 80 years, plasma fractionation has been dominated by Cohn fractionation – a chemically-driven, heavy industrial process developed during World War II, requiring large volumes of ethanol, energy, and weeks or months of processing time.
Haemafrac® is a fundamental reinvention. By leveraging discrete electrical field and custom-designed separation membranes – based on the principles of Tangential Flow Electrophoresis – Haemafrac® isolates immunoglobulins and albumin from plasma. Using an all aqueous, ethanol-free process, Haemafrac® delivers protein fractionation yields of approximately 80%, at high purity. The entire Haemafrac® manufacturing process takes only 5 days from start to finish.
“We have always believed that access to life-saving plasma medicines is a human right – not a privilege,” said Damian Thornton, CEO and Managing Director. “The Macquarie Park facility is our most significant step yet toward making that belief a reality.”
Why This Matters
The Haemafrac® yield and efficiency advantages translate directly into more medicines from every litre of donated plasma – more immunoglobulin for patients with serious conditions, more hyperimmune products for post-exposure prophylaxis, and a genuine opportunity for healthcare systems to achieve plasma medicine self-sufficiency.
Conventional Cohn facilities require 8-10 years to design and build – and for most countries are highly cost prohibitive. Cohn is also operationally very capital intensive. Conversely Haemafrac®-based facilities can be delivered at a fraction of the cost and in less than half the time. These economic benefits are highly significant both in the short and longer term.
“The Macquarie Park facility is our proof point – for patients, regulators, CDMO partners, and governments across the region working to achieve plasma medicine sovereignty,” said Mike Swan, Aegros Global Commercial Director. “Today we celebrate what we have built together.”
About Aegros Therapeutics
Aegros is an Australian growth-stage biopharmaceutical company and the world’s only specialist hyperimmune plasma fractionation CDMO. Its proprietary Haemafrac® technology delivers plasma-derived medicines – including immunoglobulins, albumin, and hyperimmune products – faster, and more economically and sustainably than conventional fractionation. It is estimated that in excess of 40 million patients worldwide are unable to access sufficient plasma medicines today. Aegros’ mission is to make plasma medicines as accessible globally as they are essential.
